What is learning?

Different interpretations of what "learning" means. All are "true", but the table may be seen as a becoming of higher "quality" down the page. Most people experience all facets - the issue is what dominates.....

Acquisition of knowledge

A vague quantitative conception of learning as involving “knowing a lot”

Memorising

Storage of information for subsequent reproduction

Utilisation of knowledge

Dawning realisation that learning may involve more than memorising facts, recognition that knowledge and skills can be useful in the real world

Abstraction of meaning

Recognises that learning involves insights into relationships within subject matter and between subject matter and the reality

Interpretative understanding

Learning seen as a means of understanding the world around us by reinterpreting knowledge

Self-actualisation

Learning as personal growth and development
