Now that you are a university student:
- Go to orientation activities. They are a lot more than booze-up disorientations.
- Join some clubs meet some people socially. Go to the functions and enjoy being a student. Discover yourself.
- Don't take on lots of part time work
- You will NOT have lots of spare time, and you have many adjustments to make before you can be sure how much time you can afford to spend on money earning work.
- The best things about university life do not take lots of money, you just need to be there and have a group of friends to enjoy it with.
- Spread your classes out
- Don't try to squeeze them all into a few days so that you have time free. You need time to reflect on what you have learned, and spend time with the people you meet.
- Plan to spend time at the university, not race home as soon as classes stop.
- You want to make it YOUR university, and feel at home in it.
- Research has shown that students who connect well with their universities are much more successful academically.
- Get a good mix of work and play. You need a social group as well as a working group.
- Plan to do plenty of work. Year 12 is NOT the hardest year you will ever do first year university is no pushover, and everyone is smart!
- Try to build a Learning Community of other students doing the same subjects.
- Get together to discuss the work being studied, the assessment, and how you are trying to cope with university in general
- Support each other and check up on each other. Make sure no-one is losing the plot
- Use the staff. There are people who care about you and want to help, make sure you maintain communication with them. Dont let a few bad stories put you off. You have a chance to really explore interesting things.
- If you find you are struggling seek help early.
- Every institution has a student welfare section, dont wait until you are in a real mess before you go and get help.
- It is OK to change course if you are in the wrong one for you. Finding out that you don't want to do something can be regarded as a successful experience if you then work out what you really DO want to do!
